I like the reading pages because it tells you at a glance the number of comments on all the recent posts.
If you view the reading pages in the sitescheme ( http://belltower.dreamwidth.org/read?style=site ), and if you set up in your preferences ( http://www.dreamwidth.org/manage/settings/?cat=display ) "New Comment Indicator: Adds the comment count to entry links. Your browser should display links in a different color if there are new comments since your last visit.", then it adds ?nc=66 to the "66 comments" link, which means it'll show as a visited link if there are no new comments since you last read it (dark red, in the default theme), and an unvisited link (light red) if there are new ones. This is handy for people who don't keep track in a text file. I think you need a dreamwidth account for this to work, because you have to edit your preferences for it to happen, but dreamwidth accounts are free, so :)
